In Your Garden
July is the best month to ...
  • Prune roses at the end of this month.
  • Make a note of how the sun is moving and make sure that your containers filled with winter flowers are getting at least five to six hours of sun a day.
  • If any of your perennials were plagued by Australian mealie bug, get rid of the diseased growth by cutting back the plants. Spray with a solution of Ludwig’s Insect Spray at four times the strength to get rid of remaining bugs.
  • If it looks as if your winter flowering annuals need a boost, water them with Margaret Roberts Supercharger.

Car maker develops its own flower species

Toyota has created two flower species that absorb nitrogen oxides and take heat out of the atmosphere.

The flowers, derivatives of the cherry sage plant and the gardenia, were specially developed for the grounds of Toyota’s Prius plant in Toyota City, Japan.

The sage derivative’s leaves have unique characteristics that absorb harmful gases, while the gardenia’s leaves create water vapour in the air, reducing the surface temperature of the factory surrounds and, therefore, reducing the energy needed for cooling, in turn producing less carbon dioxide (CO2).
